This is an annotated species-level overview and classification of living calcareous nannoplankton. It is primarily intended to act as an aide memoire to nannoplankton taxonomy, with brief notes serving as a reminder to the distinguishing features of taxa, and plates illustrating the characteristic features. Most information has been extracted from the literature, notably Kleijne (1993). The species list is essentially that of Jordan & Kleijne (1994), Jordan & Green (1994). Terminology follows Young et al. (1997). The higher classification follows Young and Bown (1997) including use higher taxa introduced by them. As in Young & Bown (1997), a three-level order-family-genus classification is used, as far as seems reasonable, based on current knowledge. Data on life-cycle combinations is from Cros et al. (2000), unless otherwise noted.
The following new combinations are introduced here, Algirosphaera cucullata, Reticulofenestra maceria, Umbilicosphaera anulus.
