09:00 Overview of work areas 1 - 3, and program. Chair Patrizia Ziveri.

The separate research tasks are focussed toward addressing a common set of objectives in three "work areas". These talks constituted a reminder of the large scale objectives of the project, the problems we are addressing and the unique contribution the project can make. They also provided a reflection point half way through the workshop to assess how well the project is structured toward meeting its objectives and provide a framework for workshop sessions in the latter part of the meeting. These talks included an element of review from the previous presentations.

      14:30 Workshop Sessions

Parallel workshops dealing with the research tasks involving several participants. The original program proposed six topics or their combinations:

      a. RT1. Culture isolation and maintenance (ETHZ, U. Caen).

      b. RT4 5. Lipid biomarker and pigment studies (CSIC, NIOZ).

      c. RT11. Study of plankton assemblages - ecological characterisation (ETHZ, FdA-VUA, CSIC, MNHN-UL).

      d. RT13, 14. Holocene and ODP sediment studies (NHM, ETHZ, FdA-VUA, MNHN- UL).

      e. RT9, 10. Physiological characterisation and biometric study of cultured coccoliths (NHM, ETHZ, CSIC, MNHN-UL)

      f. RT12. Sediment trap studies - flux rates and seasonal succession (ETHZ, FdA-VUA)

Discussion lead to a proposal by the post-docs of three parellel sessions:

      I. Genetics, phylogeny and species concept. Post-docs and invitees.

II. Geobiochemistry, pigments, ecology and life cycles. Post-docs and invitees.
