CODENET COCCOLITHOPHORID ECOLOGY CRUISE

      Participation, logistics and costs

Lisbon June 1999, organisers Mario Cachao, Anabela Oliviera, Hanno Kinkel, Jeremy Young

      LOGISTICS
      The Lisbon group can provide
      • CTD with 12 (1.7 litre) Niskin bottles and nephelometer.
      • A vacuum ramp filter device for 6 (47 m) filters.
      • A second filter device connected to the pumping system is also availabe for 5 m water depths, for 47 and 142 mm diameter filters.
      • We can arrange Nucleopore filters (47 mm). Bigger ones (142 mm) if necessary, should be provided by the participants.

      Key logistic questions:
      We need specifically to know:
      • If culture people need a winch for their phytoplankton nets (we have some info from Ian on this)?;
      • If the biochemistry people need a freezer (and what is the needed space/volume ?) ?
      • If all the participants can arrange a declaration of responsibility (personal insurance) of the Institution they are connected to ? (otherwise we need to have in advance their personal data to get a personal insurance for them, before entering the ship. This is needed since the Portuguese navy does not assume responsability for any personal injuries and/or onboard damages done by any civilian participant.

      PARTICIPATION
      • Anabela Oliviera (Lisbon)
      • Markus Geisen (NHM) I decided he has measured enough coccoliths
      • Hanno Kinkel (NIOZ)
      • Christine Klaas (ETHZ)
      • Kees van Lenning (CSIC)
      • Ian Probert (Caen)
      • Jeremy Young (NHM)
      • Patrizia Ziveri (VUA)
      • Heather Stoll (Oviedo) our latest CODENET recruit, working on Sr/Ca ratios
      • Mario Cachao (Lisbon) although he has the sense not to go on the ship
      • Maria Teresa Moita (Lisbon) again not going on the cruises, but will do phytoplankton counts

      Excess participants?
Since we need a technician (to work with the CTD) only SEVEN places are available, in each day cruise. So there is an obvious excess of likely participants. Priority will go:
      • to people who absolutely need to do their own sampling
      • to people who have no cruise experience.

After this there should be enough space for all people to go out on one of the two days, and the rather long cruise days we have planned will make this relatively desirable. We have plenty of ideas of activities for people who are not on the ship. In the unlikely event we are short of definite participants there is a long reserve list of people in the NHM who want to go.

      COSTS
We will need a budget of about 3000 euros for the ship plus directly related expeses. JY aims to meet this 50% from participants (i.e. there will be a "registration fee" of 150 euros per participant in addition to subsistence costs in Lisbon and the flight there - it still will not be a very expensive activity and if anyone has problem with this they can always ask nicely) and 50% from a central Network expenses reserve (part of the NHM budget).

      IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE
It would be useful if each one of the (likely) participants would write us a line or two about what they intend to do, what he(she) can bring and what they need from us (bottles, etc.). Do not worry if you are a bit unsure - this is not an examination in cruisework methodology.
