The state of research on the coccolithophorids, in Europe and Japan

Workshop on 16th - 17th November 1999 at National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) Tsukuba, JAPAN

Organisers: Masanobu Kawachi, Mary-Hélène Noel, NIES, Japan

CODENET Participants: Jeremy Young, Ian Probert, Markus Geisen, Patrizia Ziveri.

Detailed information - from Mary-Hélène A word of explanation: The Tsukuba research group, including participants form NIES and Tsukuba university is the main centee of research on coccolithophorid biology in Japan . Two participants from this group, Masanobu Kawachi, Mary-Hélène Noel accepted an invitation to attend the CODENET Blagnac workshop in September 199 and invited us to present CODENET results to a wider Japanese audience. The objectives of the workshop and subsequent visit are (1) to exchange research results between CODENET and Japanese workers in the field (2) to stimulate collaborations among Japanese workers with different interests in coccolithophorids, as is done in the CODENET project. 93) To explore possibilities for formal and informal collaboration between European and Japanese groups in the future (both short and long term).

After the workshop all four CODENET participants will stay in Tsukuba for the rest of the week. Subsequently Ian Probert and Markus Geisen will be taken on a field trip to Miyake Island (W of Japan)for phycological fieldwork, whilst Jeremy Young and Patrizia Ziveri visit the geological/oceanographic research groups of Hisatake Okada (Sapporo) and Ric Jordan (Yamagata).
