Electronic Calcareous Nannofossils CD-ROM v3
Ordering information, Release 3 information

The International Nannoplakton Association is pleased to announce that Version 3 of its CD-ROM No. 1 entitled "Electronic Calcareous Nannofossils" will be released at the upcoming 10th INA Conference in Lisbon, Portugal (August 29 to September 2, 2004). Holders of previous versions of the CD may trade those in 1:1 for Version 3 free of charge, thereby obtaining a free upgrade while at the meeting or afterwards by mail.

First introduced at the 9th INA Conference in Parma, Italy, in 2002, this CD has proven to be highly popular and practical for professionals and students of micropaleontology in industry, academia and government service. Its NannoWare/BugCam package now contains two interactive, icon-driven digital-image catalogs of over 1000 Cenozoic calcareous-nannofossil taxa designed to assist the investigator working at the microscope with limited literature resources. Each new version has included additional databases and features. New or improved features in the current version, Version 2004.8.3, include software innovations and new or upgraded databases as follow:

  1. The Modern NannoWare Database authored by Jeremy R. Young, Markus Geisen, Lluisa Cros, Annelies Kleijne, Claudia Sprengel, Ian Probert, and Jette Buch Ostergaard (2003; published in the Journal of Nannoplankton Research, Special Issue 1) as adapted to the NannoWare/BugCam interface by Veronica Regalado, Olivia L. Swedberg, Mitch Covington, Bryan Ladner and S. W. Wise. A new zoom feature has been added to the interface so that images can be zoomed in and out (see below).

  2. The Consolidated Taxonomic Index of Calcareous Nannoplankton. The calcispheres have now been placed in their own separate files. The two resulting indexes are provided as MS Excel files searchable by either genus or species. The Calcareous Nannofossil/plankton index has 5889 entries, whereas the Calcisphere index has 301 entries.

  3. A Cenozoic and Mesozoic Bibliography compiled by Wuchang Wei as assisted by Veronica Regalado and Jackie Ford, in both an MS Excel and MS Word format. The two MS Word files are sorted by year and by author respectively, and consist of over 10,000 entries.

  4. A Silicoflagellate Bibliography compiled from INA and GSA sources in MS Excel by Niclaos Almonor, Kevin McCartney, and Sherwood Wise.

  5. BugCam© Version 2004.1.3 authored by J. Mitchener Covington provides a number of new features, including:

Features continued from previous versions of the CD include:

  1. The Cenozoic NannoWare Database compiled by a dedicated team from Florida State University headed by Woody Wise this provides comprehensive coverage of Cenozoic nannofossils including illustrations, type decriptions, notes on their distinguishing feautures - and a graphical interface which allows rapid identificaton of species.

  2. Electronic Reprints of Calcareous Nannofossil Papers in PDF format compiled by Wuchang Wei.

  3. The Best of the INA Web Site (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/hosted_sites/ina/index.html) compiled by INA Webmaster Jeremy Young (Natural History Museum, London).

  4. An Introduction to the NannoWare/BugCam Package in an MS Power Point slide show by Mitch Covington.

Pls Note: To run NannoWare on a Macintosh computer, it will be necessary to first install the program "Virtual PC" or similar to create a Windows environment on the Mac.
