Nannoplankton dictionary
What I have done here is to produce a dictionary file
from a listing of most nannofossil and extant nannoplankton
combinations. It includes species names, generic names, and authors. I
then added some higher taxa and descriptive terminology words to give a
total of about 3000 words. The file can then be used to supplement the
regular dictionary of your word processor or email program so that it
no longer complains about every nannofossil name it encounters.
How to use the dictionary file - general principles
There are two basic approaches which should work with any program:
either
1. Consult the help files of the application and find out how to add an
extra dictionary.
or
2. Find the user/custom dictionary of the program you are using, then
cut and paste the text of this dictionary into it.
MS-Word (short explanation)
1. Put the dictionary somewhere sensible
2. Activate using Tools/Preferences/Spelling & Grammar/Custom
dictionary
(N.B. Mac Users - it may be necessary to open the file in Word then
save it as a dictionary file, it will then gain a natty icon)
Word 6.0 for Windows Setup (long explanation, plagiarised from MedTerms)
1. Copy nannos.dic to \MSAPPS\PROOF under your Windows directory. Your
Windows directory is most likely c:\windows.
2. Start Word and go to Tools, Options..., Spelling, Add...
3. The default location in the dialog is the folder where you copied
MEDTERMS.DIC in step 1. If this is not the location displayed in the
dialog, change it to match the location in step 1. nannos.dic should be
displayed as an available file. Select it and choose OK.
4. Make sure that nannos.dic is listed and checked in the Custom
Dictionaries list box and choose OK. This dictionary will now be
available in all Word sessions.
