CODENET researchers recently had the opportunity to participate in a cruise of the German research vessel Meteor from Las Palmas to Viana do Castelo. Cruise M42/4b was part of the EC funded CANIGO project and the main goal was to collect plankton samples and sediment cores form around the Canary Islands.
During the cruise the ETH crew, consisting of Jorijntje Hendericks and Hans Thierstein, was very busy describing the cores, both macroscopically and microscopically.
Claudia Sprengel (University Bremen) and Markus Geisen (NHM) were in charge of the plankton sampling for alkenone calibrations. The sample set for the alkenone composition measurements consists of 17 samples. An additional set of 50 filtered surface water samples for plankton assemblage studies have been prepared for both light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy observation on transects north and south of the Canary Islands.
Further research to be carried out on the sample material includes measuring of the alkenone composition (Hanno Kinkel, NIOZ) and taxonomic analyses of the corresponding plankton samples (University Bremen, NHM).
The participants would like to express their thanks to the scientific
shipboard party and to the crew of the Meteor that made this
journey possible
and such a success.
