Announcement
Dear CODENETeer, we are pleased to announce the fourth annual CODENET meeting. And, we are sad that it will be our final one at Château de Blagnac. In the BESD tradition of friendly exchange of ideas, frank discussion and sharp conclusions we will
- review the results of our EU program,
- compare accomplishments with the original objectives,
- find the inspiration to draw a synthesis,
- outline its relevance to Earth system science, and
- define future coccolithophorid research objectives.
CODENET review - The first day will cover reviews by the CODENET post-docs. You will have 45 minutes to present your most exciting findings, within and/or outside the original CODENET objectives (30 min. talk, 15 min. discussion). The emphasis should be on research results but also with an element of reflection on - how achievements have compared with the original objectives, on the relevance of your data, and on future research in your field.
Evening - introduction to the geological excursion (Jan van Hinte, Jan Smit)
Geological training/excursion - For the second day we plan (on request) a geological fieldtrip to show some striking examples of the sedimentary rock record of Earth System History. Dr. Jan Smit (of the VUA) will show us the cyclically bedded Cretaceoius/Tertiary boundary sequences in the Biarritz area. This will give non-geologists a chance to see some practical geology and get a feeling for how earth history is reconstructed, and the geologists will get to see some fine geology and the challenge to explain how the science works. Alternatively, you may choose to go to church in the morning and take the afternoon off.
Days 3 and 4 - open sessions. The timetable for these is still open and we will develop it in accordance with peoples preferences, suggestions and offers of contributions. It should, however, include
- ca. 30 min research presentations by CODENET participants and guests.
- future projects, outline of plans in progress and time to discuss possible future collaborations.
- publications, reports and syntheses - continuing work on joint publications, selection of content for the final report to the EU, discussion of possible synthesis publications (you can use Blagnac's synthesizer),
Feel free to bring POSTERS to present details on your analytical data and resulting ideas; there will be ample opportunity for discussion during lunch breaks.
Please, do submit an (extended) abstract, on your oral and/or poster presentations, to be included in the report on the meeting. We also welcome frank essays on your participation in this EU program and your perception of its values.
There will be special arrangements for the closing dinner on day 4. For the occasion, an after-dinner DJ will be nominated on day 1. Bring your own CD's to allow him/her to compose a musical program to your liking.
