UPDATE - FIRST CIRCULAR IS NOW AVAILABLE

Dear fellow Coccolithophore researchers and friends

At the INA 14 meeting in Reston Virginia it was recognized that much research has been done on extant coccolithophores since the 2003 modern coccos workshop, including studies of plankton, sediment trap and core-top samples. It was felt that a reunion of coccolithophore specialists in the frame of an INA Workshop would be useful to determine our progress on extant Coccolithophore research, identify gaps in our knowledge and specify targets for future collaborative research.

The University of Athens (UOA) and the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR Crete) have the pleasure to invite you to the INA Workshop “Coccolithophores 2014”, October 5-10, 2014.

The Workshop will take place at the modern facilities of HCMR, Heraklion, Crete Island, Greece, in a friendly atmosphere and in the vicinity of the deep-blue Aegean Sea.

During the Workshop we will try to catch up with the state-of-the art in Coccolithophore research through fruitful discussion and oral and poster presentations, the broad focus will be on exploring the diversity and taxonomy of modern coccolithophores including the following topics:

A Training Session concerning inverted microscopic observations of culture strains is planned. This will give non-biologist Coccolithophorid researchers’ the chance to get acquainted with living forms. There will also be sufficient time for both organized workshops and informal working meetings.

Travel expenses are yours; ask for reduced air (weekend) fares. Participation fee per person 250 Euro (based on sharing a room, €350 for asingle room). This includes hotel accommodation breakfast and dinner, ice breaker, light lunch, coffee/tea breaks twice per day and a closing Gala dinner; all events will take place at Cretaquarium .

Please declare your interest by emailing Maria (mtriant@geol.uoa.gr) or Jeremy (jeremy.young@ucl.ac.uk). Abstract instructions and payment details will be announced shortly. We are looking forward to see you in Crete.

Maria, Stella, Jeremy
