Maria V. Triantaphyllou:
An integrated biostratigraphic study, based on calcareous nannofossil assemblages, was carried out on Plio-Pleistocene terrigenous sediments of Cefallinia Island, following the biostratigraphical scheme of Rio et al. (1990) Late Miocene to Pleistocene sediments of S Cefallinia are mainly composed of marls, silts, silty clays, sandstones and calcarenites. The main goal of the present study is to perform calcareous nannofossil analyses in order to obtain a more precise determination of biozones, improve the biostratigraphic resolution and provide new chronostratigraphic data on the sedimentary evolution of the Plio-Pleistocene on Cefallinia. The quantitative and semiquantitative analyses of nannofossil assemblages allowed an accurate identification of biozones MNN12, MNN19a, MNN19b, MNN19c and MNN19d, confirming once more that the genus Gephyrocapsa has proven to be a good taxon for Pleistocene biostratigraphy of terrigenous sediments.
